In late 2025, Jonathan Lewis, a London-based freelance Monitor and Sound Engineer with over 15 years of experience in the international touring industry, commissioned our firm Path Law Group to restructure his U.S. work authorization after his sole touring employer announced it was stepping back from live touring. Lewis's career had spanned arena tours, global festivals, and nationally televised broadcasts for artists including Clairo, Freya Ridings, Travis, and AIR, as well as high-profile private and diplomatic engagements through the luxury entertainment agency ALR Music. At the time of his initial consultation, Lewis held a single-employer O-1 visa tied exclusively to Crush Touring, which was set to expire in May 2026.

The mission

Andrew Alexander, a veteran touring technician acting as Lewis's U.S. agent and petitioner, needed to secure Lewis's continued authorization to work as a Monitor and Sound Engineer for a diverse slate of U.S. clients over the next three years, including Crush Touring (Clairo), Clair Global, and ALR Music, and elite private and corporate events across the United States.

The biggest challenge with his case was structural rather than evidentiary. Crush Touring, the sole employer behind Lewis's existing O-1 visa, was ending its touring cycle to focus on studio work, leaving him without a qualifying U.S. employer and facing an estimated 12 to 18 months without authorized work. Our founder and immigration attorney Ashkan Emami met with Lewis in an initial consultation on August 15, 2025. Ashkan identified that Lewis's single-employer visa structure was itself the obstacle, and recommended converting to a multi-agency O-1B structure. A single U.S. agent-petitioner representing Lewis across several simultaneous engagements, supported by deal memos spanning three years from different employers, rather than a one-year extension tied to a single company could make his case much stronger. This approach would preserve Lewis's full three-year eligibility window and open the door to building a petition anchored in his broader body of work across this time with Clairo, Clair Global, and ALR Music, rather than resting on a single, now-defunct touring relationship.

The strategy

From the August 2025 consultation onward, our team worked to secure signed deal memos from Crush Touring, Clair Global, and ALR Music establishing Lewis's forthcoming three-year engagements while compiling the documentary record needed to satisfy the O-1B's tightly scrutinized extraordinary-ability-in-the-arts standard. The team built the petition around these O-1B evidentiary criteria:

  • Leading or critical roles for distinguished organizations and productions: Established by including his forthcoming work as Monitor Engineer for Clairo's U.S. arena tour and festival dates through Crush Touring, for Clair Global's touring, broadcast, and arena clientele, and for ALR Music's private, corporate, and high-profile wedding events, alongside past critical roles on Clairo's performances at Coachella, Forest Hills Stadium, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Freya Ridings's headline show at the Hammersmith Apollo and the globally broadcast Earthshot Prize Ceremony, and ALR Music's Royal Wedding performance, U.S. Ambassador's Residence engagement, and the Engage Summit at KOKO London.
  • National and international recognition through published materials: Established by including dedicated features and production profiles in TPi Magazine, SSE Audio's "Engineer in Focus," and multiple technical spotlights from Allen & Heath, alongside broader press coverage of the artists and events he supported in Rolling Stone, NME, and Flood Magazine.
  • Significant recognition from recognized experts: Evidenced by seven testimonial letters from figures including Alex Le Roux (Founder and Managing Director, ALR Music), David McDonald (FOH Engineer for Adele, Frank Ocean, and Florence and the Machine), Gemma Peacock (Tour Manager for Sam Smith and Yungblud), Clairo (Claire Cottrill) herself, Jonny Williams (Founder, Famous Engineering), Justin Weaver (Clair Global), and Misty Roberts (Tour Manager for HAIM).
  • A record of high salary and remuneration relative to others in the field: Evidenced by signed touring contracts placing Lewis's compensation at $4,000 to $4,500 per week and a guaranteed $1,000 per day for private events, figures that exceeded the highest nationally reported wages for sound engineers of $2,596 to $3,780 per week according to O*NET, Indeed, and ZipRecruiter benchmarks, along with invoices and bank records documenting past earnings at a comparable premium.

Building this record required close coordination across three separate petitioning organizations rather than one. We secured and finalized deal memos from Crush Touring, Clair Global, and ALR Music; gathering signed recommendation letters from a deliberately diverse set of recommenders spanning artists, tour managers, and production executives; and compiling years of trade-press coverage and touring documentation into a single evidentiary package. Weekly case check-ins through the fall and winter tracked outstanding signatures and documents, and on January 15, 2026, our team proactively recommended premium processing given the approaching expiration of Lewis's prior visa. The petition was filed on schedule in early February 2026, well ahead of the deadline, leaving a comfortable buffer for adjudication.

Outcome

The O-1B was approved.

Lewis is now authorized to work in the United States for three years as a Monitor and Sound Engineer across multiple U.S. clients, including Crush Touring on Clairo's rehearsals, residencies, arena tour, and festival dates, Clair Global's touring, broadcast, and arena-level productions, and ALR Music's private events, high-profile weddings, and corporate performances nationwide. The O-1B resolved the employment gap created by his prior employer's exit from touring and put his career on considerably better footing for future U.S. work.
